Course Structure

Part-time study

Study your course part-time and take classes in the evenings and at the weekend at times that work for you.

You will study 14 hours per week for 12 weeks

(August Intake) Live sessions timetable

Saturday 09:00 – 17:00 (UK time)

Monday 18:00 – 21:00 (UK time)

Wednesday 18:00 – 21:00 (UK time)

(September Intake) Live sessions timetable

Saturday 09:00 – 17:00 (UK time)

Tuesday 18:00 – 21:00 (UK time)

Thursday 18:00 – 21:00 (UK time)

You will also be required to commit additional time for planning and completion of course assignments.

You’ll receive an introduction to the practice of how to teach English to speakers of other languages. Areas of study include:

Live input sessions
120 hours of input sessions, which examine theoretical and practical aspects of EFL teaching.

Observed Teaching Practice
You will complete six hours of supervised classroom teaching.

Unknown Language Journal
You will also spend four hours learning an unknown language and reflecting on this experience.

Learner Profile & Written Assignments
You will be asked to complete a series of short written assignments relating to the components of the course to help you analyse and reflect upon them.

Externally moderated by Trinity College London
You will need to complete an internal Language Awareness Test in the final week and speak with a Trinity Moderator about various aspects of the course on the last day.

This course will help you to:

  • Become aware of learning needs and learner motivation
  • Create and maintain learner interest
  • Prepare lessons plans with achievable aims
  • Stimulate and maintain active participation in a class
  • Evaluate and adapt published material, and create useful teaching materials
  • Gain a broad understanding of the main advantages and disadvantages of various language teaching approaches
  • Evaluate your own effectiveness as a teacher
  • Become aware of post-course development and the structure of the profession
  • Develop knowledge of phonological, lexical and syntactic features of contemporary English
  • This course will give you an internationally recognised qualification which will enable you to teach EFL/ESOL in the UK and overseas
  • Gives practical techniques which can be used immediately in the classroom

This course is externally validated and moderated by Trinity College London so you can be confident you have studied a widely-recognised course as you progress in your teaching career.

Entry requirements

  • A copy of your most significant academic certificate because it is a Trinity College stipulation that proof of qualifications is rigorously checked.
  • The capability to cope with the academic requirements of the course. This may mean having a university degree, or the academic qualifications that would have enabled you to get accepted on to a degree course.

The skills to fluently and accurately communicate in spoken and written English. If English is not your native language, we require an IELTS score of 7.0 (or equivalent) in each of the four skills. If English is your native language, you need to have a GCSE in English (grade C minimum) or equivalent.

  • You should be interested in learning and teaching and have appropriate personal qualities for teaching.
  • If you don’t meet the specific requirements, we may need to see evidence that you have an awareness of relevant transferable skills that have been acquired through work experience.
