A Journey of Courage: Reflections on Growing Up as a Ukrainian Refugee in London

A Journey of Courage: Reflections on Growing Up as a Ukrainian Refugee in London

At just 18 years old, Sasha has a story of resilience and adaptability that inspires many. As a Ukrainian refugee living in North London with her mother and twin brother, Sasha reflects on her journey from the uncertainties of leaving home to embracing a new life in the UK.

Embracing New Beginnings

When Sasha landed in the UK, she was met with a whirlwind of emotions – a mix of uncertainty and determination. She recalls, “It was a very worrying time for me and my family, and I still think about the tragedy unfolding at home quite a bit. My family and I had such a positive experience coming here, I cannot express enough how grateful I am for all the kindness shown to us.” Despite the challenges, the warmth and support from the community have been a beacon of hope for Sasha and her family.

Navigating Cultural Diversity

One of the most significant adjustments Sasha faced was immersing herself in London’s multicultural environment. Coming from a less diverse background, she found the array of different languages, foods, and customs both challenging and exhilarating. “It’s been wonderful learning more about different cultures and making friends from all different backgrounds. It is one of my favourite things about living in London,” Sasha shares. This new cultural landscape has broadened her perspectives and unexpectedly enriched her life.

Adapting to a New Education System

Transitioning to the UK’s education system was another hurdle. Having completed her high school education in Ukraine, Sasha found the teaching and learning methods in the UK to be quite different. Nevertheless, she embraced the opportunity to continue her education. “Picking up my education again here has been a rewarding journey of self-discovery,” she says. As she looks forward to graduating this year, Sasha is set on entering a Marketing apprenticeship programme.

Stepping into the Professional World

Since 2021, Sasha has been interning at Oxford International, gaining valuable experience in social media and digital marketing. This role has opened many doors, offering her a glimpse into the business world and fuelling her passion for marketing. Her dream is to build a successful career in this field. “I’m giving it my all to make that happen,” Sasha affirms.

Longing for Home

Despite her positive experiences in London, Sasha still misses many aspects of her life in Ukraine. The farm-fresh beets, her beloved pet rabbit, and the close-knit community are constant reminders of home. Staying connected with friends and family in Ukraine keeps her grounded and provides comfort amidst the changes.

Looking Ahead

As Sasha prepares to embrace the future, she is reminded that growth comes from embracing change, celebrating diversity, and moving forward with courage. Her journey is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the transformative power of new beginnings.

In Sasha’s words, her journey is far from over. With a heart full of gratitude and a mind set on her dreams, she continues to navigate her path with unwavering determination and hope.
