Course Details:

You’ll study the topics below independently using a variety of learning materials – for example, recorded presentations, articles, and case studies.

Topic 1: Understanding English 

Common accent traits, varied vowel sounds.
Common nonliteral language.
Phrasal verbs, sayings, metaphors, synonyms; techniques for familiarisation.
Techniques for study and familiarisation.

Topic 2: Communication 

Email routines, etiquette, and style.
Interpreting and following instructions.
Communicating effectively with classmates.

Topic 3: What is expected of students?

Preparing to attend classes – what to take with you
Individual study responsibilities.
Attendance and homework.
Self-reflection and goal setting.
Methods of engagement: emails, portals, noticeboards, etc.

Topic 4: US Education

Modes of learning; Lectures, seminars, workshops, tutorials.
Methods of assessment.
Plagiarism, citations, and referencing.

Topic 5: Outside the classroom

Dealing with common administrative tasks.
Understanding utility bills, healthcare, and travel.
Opening and managing bank accounts.
Securing part-time work to support your studies. Preparing a CV.

Topic 6: Steps towards a successful future

Current actions for future success – planning for the bigger picture.
Understanding post-education pathways.

This course runs in two parts and consists of six modules covering a diverse range of themes.

  • Approximately 20 hours of asynchronous self-directed study through a series of themed topics each focussing on separate aspects of university life in the USA. This course is asynchronous, so you can complete it at your own speed and access it from a number of devices. We recommend using a laptop or PC, though you can also use a mobile phone or tablet.
  • Lessons are typically broken down into; Video Content, Reading Materials, Multiple choice quiz questions, and Interactive digital activities to cement learning and test knowledge.

At the end of the course, there will be a multiple-choice quiz to check your understanding. Answering 90% correctly will bring the course to an end and you will receive your certificate. The test can be taken multiple times.

When you’ve finished the course, you’ll receive a certificate from Oxford International Digital Institute as evidence that you’ve attended and passed the course!
